Beyond the Shadows of Phonthong
by Kay Danes

Dare I attend to places I am told the angels fear
and set my feet upon an unchanged path of darkness
Knowing others who have gone before me, stumble

Dare I reach my arm outside these bars and touch the sunlight
to warm my soul against the cold whispers of the dead
They send to me a warning of evil lurking

All my thoughts are all of you, my children
all my hopes, my dreams that you may somehow know
how much I have endured to find my way

The pain of those around me brands my soul
In this place filled with sorrow, unlike any I have known
I find no peace, my heart brims with loneliness beyond compare

Yet I hold the hand of hope and look to life beyond these walls,
and all the while, though I am tired and wish for sleep eternal
thoughts return to you and I find strength

STAY STRONG - YOU ARE NOT ALONE

How did this happen
I cannot comprehend
She's living a nightmare
It seems without an end

Does she wake each morning
To see a friendly face
Or as the light's dawning, realize
It's still the same horrific place

She's in a cell with others
But must feel so alone
Her one ray of hope
Comes on Thursdays
But then
Quickly it is gone

Fifteen minutes of hope
To Australia she can speak
A chance for her to hear
What her children have to say
To feel as if she's with them
Connected in some small way

But 15minutes passes quickly
Once again she is left with grief
And returned to her cell
To sit quietly in disbelief

Does she stare at the walls
Knowing she did nothing wrong
Does her spirit begin to wither
Does she wonder - how long?

Can she hear my voice whisper
Hear me say her name

'Kay, try to keep your hope
And take it day by day'
'For if you close your eyes
And listen with your heart
You have the strength and power
To see your family through the dark'

'I know you can reach them
With your mind, if you believe
And feel your family's presence
To give your spirit a lift'
'For even as you sit
Within those four walls
Our spirit and love beside you
To help keep you standing tall'

'Our eyes may not meet
Our fingertips not touch
But you are not alone
We are with you in your heart'
'Try to remember
Days that made you glad
Use these memories
To help you when you're sad'

'For these are things
No-one can take away
These are your memories
To help you through the day's

'Remember in your heart
You have us all close by
Just close your eyes and think of us
And we'll be there all the time'

For our spirits
Can sit with you, in need
Until you are safe again
The time they set you free

'When you Believe'

In this time of fear
When prayer so often proves in vain
Hope seems like the summer bird
Too swiftly flown away
Yet now Im standing here
My hearts so full, I cant explain
Seeking faith and speakin words
I never thought Id say

There can be miracles
When you believe
Though hope is frail
Its hard to kill
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe

They dont always happen when you ask
And its easy to give in to your fears
But when youre blinded by your pain
Cant see the way, get through the rain
A small but still, resilient voice
Says hope is very near

There can be miracles
When you believe
Though hope is frail
Its hard to kill
Who knows what miracles
You can achieve
When you believe somehow you will
You will when you believe
